Tortuga Caribbean Rum Cakes
I recently had the opportunity to try a couple of Tortuga Caribbean Rum Cakes. I wasn’t able to request specifically which ones I’d like to try so I didn’t get a chocolate one, but I did use a suggestion and added some chocolate syrup to the two I did get (original and coconut). Tortuga Rum Cakes are baked and imported from Grand Cayman.
Now, I’ve never had rum cake before and while I’m not a huge rum fan, I don’t mind it in mixed drinks and who doesn’t like cake?
I was very pleasantly surprised at how delicious both cakes are. Out of the package they both had a distinct rum smell but it’s by no means as overpowering when you eat it. Both were extremely moist thanks to the vacuum packaging they’re packed in and unlike a lot of other bought cakes these actually tasted like cake!
I put a little drizzle of chocolate sauce on a bite of both of them (sadly, I didn’t have time to make ganache or run to the store for some good sauce) but the rum cake was definitely the star of the show. The kids each wanted some but I don’t like them having alcohol before 5:00, so they’ll have to wait.*
The coconut flavor in the coconut cake was very strong, but I love coconut so that’s ok! It had flaked coconut on top and as with the original the cake itself was delicious. Also good with a little chocolate sauce but I liked this one better on its own.

Other serving suggestions (which aren’t needed but are always fun!) include cutting the cakes into strips for chocolate fondue, adorn with chocolate sauce and/or chocolate shavings, etc. Tortuga also offers a huge selection of chocolate candies: fudge, truffles, and chocolate rum balls!
