The Ultimate Winter Drink

We’ve been blessed (?) with an overabundance of snow this winter, so the outdoor winter activities are in full swing. From toboganning to skiing to skating on outdoor rinks, there is never a shortage of things to do. Even shovelling the driveway can be turned into a competition given enough imagination. Heck, you’ve got to do something to keep that from becoming old after the first hour or two.

The downside of winter activities, is that you can come back inside wet, soggy, cold, and in need of a little pick-me-up. Here’s where the ultimate winter drink comes in. Of course I’m talking about hot chocolate. Made for all ages (although a little something special can be added in for the youth challenged of us), hot chocolate is the absolute best way to top off an afternoon of winter fun.

Don’t go for the instant powdered variety. While it will do in a pinch, or if you’ve got kids and you go through tons of the stuff, it just can’t compare to homemade hot cocoa. Dress your hot chocolate up by using coffee instead of milk, add some of the aforementioned something special like irish cream or creme de menthe, or add whipped cream, marshmallows, or sprinkles on top.

Ingredients:

1 Tbsp cocoa powder
1 Tbsp sugar
1 cup milk
1/2 tsp vanilla

In a small saucepan, heat the milk but do not boil. Combine cocoa powder and sugar in a mug. Pour a small amount of hot milk into the mug and stir until blended. Add the remaining milk and the vanilla. Stir, garnish, and enjoy.

One other thing I like to do, instead of using a spoon I use a candy cane to stir my cocoa with. This makes it just slightly a bit more festive for the holiday season and tastes great.

Mmm, that sounds yummy, and very timely too. That would be a great way to serve hot cocoa to your holiday guests.
