Spinach, Tomatoes, and now Chocolate!
Who would have thought salmonella would turn up in these foods? Up until a few short months ago, I thought salmonella was primarily a problem in undercooked meat. Then we had salmonella scares with fresh spinach, followed by tomatoes, and now some Hershey’s chocolate bars. Well, apparently there are about 2500 different types of salmonella so I guess almost anything is fair game.
Here’s what happened last week. The Hershey’s chocolate factory in Smith’s Falls, Ontario issued a recall of certain products because they felt there was salmonella contamination at the plant. There are saying that none of the products involved were produced for Hallowe’en or Christmas, and that most of them had actually not even made it to store shelves yet. But, to be on the safe side you can check the date code that is on the back of the package. Date codes from 6417 to 6455 are the ones that have been recalled. This Hershey’s plant remains shut down for now. I guess the workers will just have to stay home and eat chocolate for the time being.

I don’t think anyone actually got sick this time around. In fact, most of the chocolate had apparently not even made it to the store shelves - it was all still in their distribution system. Still, it makes you think…
