Jesus, In Chocolate

Well, here’s something in the news that is bound to stir the chocolate pot a little bit. On April 1st, just in time for Easter, a 6 foot chocolate statue of Jesus will be unveiled by its creator, Cosimo Cavallaro, in Lab Gallery in the Roger Smith Hotel in midtown Manhattan.
The statue will be positioned on the cross, and will be available for viewing from the street from midnight-1am, and from 6-7pm until April 7th.
The statue was created from 200 pounds of chocolate and can currently be seen on the front page of his website at CosimoCavallaro.com. What do you think - an inspired piece of work, or a blasphemy?

I’m not quite sure why the church is so upset about this. From what I understand, it is the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights that is really up in arms over the whole thing. The only thing I read referred to the fact that the Jesus sculpture is naked, and that it was felt that was inappropriate for something children could see passing by. Well, many sculptures are naked, so what’s the big deal? Seems to me this just brings more recognition to Easter and the reason we celebrate it. How could that be a bad thing?

I think I agree with you Cathy - although I did cringe a bit this morning when I heard this on the news, and the news folks said that the sculptor said he hopes people take a bite out of the statue, that really showed his true feelings.

The bite comment IS a little weird.

Apparently New York’s Lab Gallery, who was originally to have displayed the chocolate Jesus, has cancelled the exhibit. The artist has apparently had many other offers, but I haven’t heard yet if it is going to be shown elsewhere.
