Hershey’s Extra Dark

by Heather on July 12th, 2007

hershey extra darkI tried a Hershey’s Extra Dark Macadamia Nut and Cranberry bar and I had no desire to finish it. It tasted exactly like Hershey’s semi-sweet chocolate chips which I haven’t used in a while because they taste waxy. I think I was expecting something more like a Cadbury Fruit & Nut bar (also made by Hershey in the US), unfortunately it was nowhere near it.

antioxidants.jpgHershey appears to be marketing these as a health food (they have a comparison chart of the amount of antioxidants a bar contains compared to other things like blueberries, walnuts and raisins), though I can’t help but think most people don’t care much about that when they’re looking for a candy bar.

Have you tried one? What did you think?

Hi Anna! You bring up a good point, re: having a treat that comes off a bit healthier than something else on the shelf. Did you try the macadamia nut and cranberry? Is there a different one you’d recommend?

I tried the regular dark chocolate from Hershey’s and they’re not that good. I think the cocoa aftertaste was a not as refined as other better-quality chocolates. But, it’s not as expensive either.

Have you tried the special dark cocoa they have come out with? Maybe you have and I missed it but…mmmm…it makes a definite difference in baked goods.

    Heather,
my dad in-law thinks the same way as you - I haven’t tried them myself yet. Hersheys might be able to improve their chocolates (especially dark) with the partnership with Barry-Callebaut - we’ll see ….

The wrapping makes it look like you’re going to get big chunks of macadamia nuts and cranberries mixed in that bar. Instead, there are just flecks — yes, flecks, — of nuts and tiny soury gummy bits that must be the cranberries, or something.

Theory seems to be that if it’s a health food, it shouldn’t taste good.

    And it doesn’t.
